I enlarged this headstone trying to determine the symbol. Could it be a clover leaf? No. Could it be a stylised thistle? No.
Good heavens! It is a peace dove flying down toward the departed with a twig in its beak.
Are you a member of the Francis family? I spend an inordinate amount of my time buried in family history and cemeteries. So much to do; so little time left.
I see that George Everest, even though an interloper, is buried in this same graveyard. I had never paused to consider that the mountain was obviously named after someone.
Julie - I'm not a member of the Francis family. I'm a family history searcher too but my family were mainly from Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire. Francisca - sorry you had problems leaving a comment; I'll go turn it off :o)

The dove shape is so intriguing! Like an emblem, almost a crest in the way it seems to be crafted!

It is interesting that there is no age listed for daughter Ann, but both Elizabeth and James lived to a good age.
