John Frere R.N.

Family grave of John James Bartholomew Edward Frere (1812-1864), his wife Anne and daughters Anne and Susannah, St. Andrew's Old Church, Church Road. On the 1851 census, John, Anne and daughter Anne were living at Clarence Baths, Stoke Damerel, Devonport; John's occupation was given as Commander, Royal Navy. On the 1861 census, Anne and their daughters were staying with her sister at Stanford Rectory, Faringdon, Berkshire; John was Captain of HMS Orion and away at sea.

Wave

Mucky beige-coloured sea with floating seaweed = bad weather.

No BBQs

Peculiarly apt on the longest day of the year; it's far too cold, wet and windy to even consider eating outdoors...

Short lives

Gravestone of three children born to William and Augusta Olding, St. Andrew's Old Church, Church Road.

Turning brown

At first glance, many of the trees round where I live look as though autumn's arrived early. The leaf browning is actually wind and salt damage - we've had strong winds blowing inland from the sea over the last few days.

Sniffing the air

It's beautiful weather today; Flossie's out on the balcony making the most of it. The sunshine is very welcome but judging by the forecast, we'll be back to rain and greyness tomorrow.

Sacred to the memory

Gravestone of Caroline and Richard Fisher, St Andrew's Old Church, Church Road.

Walking by the sea

I'm ignoring the real weather today (it's cold with leaden grey sky and high winds) in favour of this view of Hove seafront taken last Sunday.

...and Now

Part of Walsingham Terrace is still standing (although the street has been renamed Kingsway) and some of the sunken garden remains. The Hove lagoon bandstand was removed at the very end of the 1960s and replaced by Babylon Lounge bar and club, now reopened as The View.
