Fishing

As well as sea fishing from boats, fishing from the shore is popular from Hove seafront round to the Marina. Depending on the season, some of the species caught are mackerel, plaice and bass.

Stand-off

There's a lot of traffic trying to get up and down Hove Street this morning - a section of Kingsway, the main coast road, has been blocked off by police cars (you can see one car near the centre of the photo, just to the left, plus a couple of policewomen in yellow high-visibility jackets). According to the local paper website, there's a stand-off going on between police and a burglar who's perched on a third-floor window ledge of a house in St Aubyns, two streets away.
ETA - the stand-off resolved.

Where's Batman?

The annual Sussex Beacon Half Marathon took place this morning. The 13-mile route starts in Madeira Drive, Brighton, and continues through the city centre, along the seafront to Hove, out past Brighton Marina and then back to the finish at Madeira Drive. About 5000 runners took part, raising money for the Sussex Beacon. Some of the runners wore fancy dress; I can see Robin near the front, but where's Batman?

Cast a giant shadow

The sun's out today; it feels warm and the sunlight is strong enough to cast wonderful shadows down Hove Street.

Busy Brighton

It's half term holiday for local schools and the city centre has been very busy all week. The photo was taken in Queen's Road, the road that runs from Brighton Station to the Clock Tower and continues as West Street right down to the seafront.

Weather worn

Living close to the sea for the first time in my life, it's fascinating to see how salt corrodes metal and destroys paint and woodwork.

Being bossy

Letterboxes in the wall outside one of the large, detached houses in Princes Crescent.

Pedestrians only

Walking south from the Jubilee Library brings you to New Road, a pedestrian-friendly thoroughfare running alongside the Pavilion Gardens.

Friday 13 February 2009

Zilli Brasserie

Zilli Brasserie is directly opposite Brighton's Jubilee Library - Zilli, a branch of Pizza Express and the library form three sides of a square; the fourth side is Jubilee Street.

One of my favourite places

The award-winning Jubilee Library, Jubilee Street, Brighton; not only a brilliant library but a pleasant place to linger, read the daily papers and do a little knitting. I took several shots from the same angle - the building is at its best in strong sunlight - this version has a couple of street sweepers (these days, I think we're supposed to call them 'cleansing operators' or some such PC name) adding touches of colour to the deep shadow on the right.

The Peace Statue

Residents of both Brighton and Hove contributed to the fund to build a memorial to Edward VII after his death in 1910. The memorial, built on the Brighton/Hove boundary and topped by an angel holding an orb and an olive branch, was unveiled in 1912 and is known as the Peace Statue.

Tuesday 10 February 2009

Straddling the boundary

The Meeting Place Cafe is a popular place to stop for refreshments along the seafront. The cafe building is in Brighton; the outdoor seating area in Hove - the best of both worlds.

Monday 9 February 2009

Changing places

The white line across the seafront marks the point where Hove becomes Brighton (or Brighton becomes Hove if you're walking in the other direction). Hove is to the right of the line, Brighton to the left.

Heraldry

Hove's coat of arms and Latin motto, Floreat Hova (May Hove Flourish) on a shopfront in George Street.

Looking in the opposite direction

George Street again - this time looking southwards towards Church Road.

Wednesday 4 February 2009

George Street

George Street is about five minutes walk from where I live; this view is looking northwards towards Blatchington Road. The street is pedestrianised during the day and packed with restaurants and all kinds of useful shops.

Tuesday 3 February 2009

Almost back to normal

Most of yesterday's snow is melting and the sun is shining; it still feels very cold though.

Monday 2 February 2009

Snow

The forecast snow fell overnight; there's more on the way...

Sunday 1 February 2009

Dark sky, silver sea

Snow is forecast and the light is very strange this morning - the sky looks almost black but the sunlit sea is sparkling and silvery.
