All aboard the Skylark

Portland House

Built in 1893 at a cost of £9,210 7s 9d, the Convalescent Police Seaside Home in Portland Road, Hove, was opened by Princess Christian, Queen Victoria's third daughter. The money to build the Home was raised by voluntary donations and the majority of the patients came from the Metropolitan Police. The Home housed wounded soldiers and sailors during World War I; these days, the building operates as Portland House, a nursing home for elderly patients.

The streets round my flat in Princes Avenue are slowly changing their appearance; trees and garden shrubs are responding to the warm sunny weather and starting to turn green.

I like the way that beach huts have two faces. The seaward faces are brightly coloured and many are decorated with hand-crafted number and name plaques; the faces pointing away from the sea are blandly identical.

It won't be long now - warmer weather is almost here...

Early-warning system

Yesterday's photo showed the replica Armada signal beacon at the western end of Hove seafront. This is the plaque at the base of the beacon - 'In 1588 a Beacon near this site formed part of a national network used to alert the public against the Spanish Armada. On the 19 July 1988 his Worship the Mayor Councillor Jim Buttimer lit this replica to commemorate the 400th anniversary of this event'.

Watching the waves

It's a beautiful morning for a walk by the sea; bright blue sky, strong sunshine and a crisp wind ruffling the sea into sparkling white waves.

Looks a little drab

This is the end building on yesterday's private road and it's about all you can see of the houses when walking along the seafront. This one doesn't look particularly special on a cold, grey day; I must shoot it again when the sun is shining and the sky's blue!

Keep out!

This is the beginning of Western Esplanade, a private road of large, white-painted houses facing the sea at the western end of Hove seafront. The beach in front of the houses is private too.
