Edward English

Gravestone of Edward English, St. Andrew's Old Church, Church Road. The inscription reads: In memory of Edward English Esqre. of Streatham, Surrey, 31st January 1863, aged 73 years.
According to census records, Edward English was living at 2, Belle Vue Terrace, Streatham with two servants in 1861. He is described as a widower and his occupation given as 'Proprietor of Houses'.

One side only

One side of the Sturt family gravestone, St. Andrew's Old Church, Church Road; lettering on the far side has been worn away by wind and rain and is no longer legible.
The inscription on this side reads: In memoriam Mary Elizabeth Sturt, died May 18th 1817, aged 23 years. William Sturt, died June 13th 1820, aged 46 years. Richard Sturt, died November 5th 1820, aged 3 months. Richard Sturt, died June 4th 1836, aged 53 years. Thomas Sturt, died November 18th 1836, aged 47 years. Richard Harry Sturt, died April 21st 1854, aged 1 year. Henry Sturt, died August 31st 1855, aged 38 years. Maria Sturt, died September 8th 1858, aged 34 years.
I had a dig around in BMD and census records but couldn't find much - Richard Harry Sturt's birth in the second quarter of 1854 is recorded in Steyning, Sussex, and Maria Sturt's death in 1858 is recorded in Brighton.

Short and to the point

Gravestone of William Pitt, St. Andrew's Old Church, Church Road. 
The inscription reads: Sacred to the memory of William Pitt who departed this life 24th July 1850.
William's death in 1850 age 64 is recorded in Steyning, Sussex, and William appears on the 1841 census. He's living in New Road, New Shoreham, age 55 with his wife Ann age 50 and four children Elizabeth, Henriette, George and Harriet.

Shining light

Gravestone of Harriet Maria Willock and her daughter Maria, St. Andrew's Old Church, Church Road. 
The inscription reads: To the most beloved memory of Harriet Maria widow of A. C. Willock Roy. Arty. (Royal Artillery) departed this life Ascension Day 1854. 
Also in loving memory of Maria only daughter of the above departed this life Sunday April 2d. 1882.
"The path of the just is as a shining light that shineth more and more unto the perfect day" Proverbs IV:18.
I can't find any records for Harriet or her husband; their daughter Maria's death in 1882 age 63 is recorded in Brighton.

Major General James Durant

Gravestone of James and Sarah Durant, St. Andrew's Old Church, Church Road. 
The inscription reads: Sacred to the memory of Major General James Durant of the Bengal Army who died on the 28th of September 1850 aged 68 years. 
And of Sarah Mason, his widow who died on the 10th of December aged 72 years. 
I can't find records for James apart from his death in Brighton in 1850; Sarah appears on the 1851 census living at 13 Hyde Park Gate, Kensington with her children James aged 11, Bessie aged 10 and four servants. She's on the 1861 census (widow, aged 44, living at 6 Eastbourne Terrace, Paddington, with Bessie aged 20 and one servant) and the 1881 census (widow of General Durant, aged 65, lodging at 51 Eastbourne Terrace, Paddington).

Asleep in Jesus

Family gravestone of Alan Hyde Gardner, St. Andrew's Old Church, Church Road. 
The inscription reads: Sacred to the memory of Alan Hyde Gardner Commander of the Indian Navy, third son of the late Rear Admiral the Honble. Francis Farington Gardner R.N. who died in this parish 11th November 1858, aged 44 years.
Also in memory of Francis Farington Gardner, who died at Brighton 8th December 1875, aged 18 years only son of the above Alan Hyde Gardner, and Lucy Elizabeth, his wife. 
"The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away: Blessed be the name of the Lord." Job 1. V 21.Also in memory of the said Lucy Elizabeth Gardner, who died 17th October 1886.

Sir John Hindmarsh

Family gravestone of Sir John Hindmarsh, St. Andrew's Old Church, Church Road. 
The inscription reads: Sacred to the memory of Rear Admiral Sir John Hindmarsh, Knt. K. H. who died on the 29th. of July 1860 aged 76 years. 
Also in memory of Susannah Wilson Lady Hindmarsh, the beloved wife of the above who died on the 2nd. of April 1859 aged 73 years. 
Also in memory of Ann Hindmarsh, sister of the above who died on the 13th. of February 1859 aged 70 years.

John Barnett

Family gravestone of John Barnett, St. Andrew's Old Church, Church Road. The inscription reads: In memory of John Barnett who died 11th April 1871 in the 70th year of his age. Also of Eliza, his beloved wife who died 20th October 1883 in her 75th year. And of Ann Edwards, sister of the above Eliza Barnett, died 25th November 1886 in her 85th year.

Elizabeth Croft

Gravestone of Elizabeth Croft, St. Andrew's Old Church, Church Road. The inscription reads: Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth, youngest daughter of Herbert Croft Esqre.. formerly of Charterhouse London, she departed this life on the 2nd of Octr. 1856 in the 87 year of her age.

Lieut Colonel Henry Hebden

Gravestone of Henry and Mary Ann Hebden, St. Andrew's Old Church, Church Road.
The inscription reads: Sacred to the memory of Lieut Colonel Henry Hebden. Late 5(?)th Regiment. Died October 24th 1879, in the 90th year of his age. 
And of Mary Ann, widow of the above. Died March 18th 1887.
Believe and thou shall be saved.

George Tovey

Gravestone of George Tovey and Sophia Tovey Bostock, St. Andrew's Old Church, Church Road.
The inscription reads: George Tovey born 1787 died 1858. Sophia Tovey Bostock born 1800. 
I've had a dig through BMD and census records with very little success and I can't find out what relation Sophia was to George - possibly they were cousins or even siblings. Records do show that Sophia died in the 3rd quarter of 1865 in Brighton.
The 1851 census throws up one possible sighting of George and Sophia at 54 Cambridge Terrace, Paddington, St. Marylebone. George is described as a widowed visitor, born in Scotland and a Colonel in the Army; there's an entry at the same address for a Sophia T. Bostock who is described as the married daughter of the head of household, Sophia Hirby.

Fulsome praise

Gravestone of Frederick Cooper and his wife Mary Ann Cooper, St. Andrew's Old Church, Church Road.
The inscription reads: Sacred to the memory of Frederick Cooper, Esquire. Steward of the manors of the Dukes of Norfolk and for nearly forty years of this manor of Hove.
While respected in his profession for his attainments, high standard of duty, and strict sense of honor he was endeared to his friends and relatives by his amiability, affectionate solicitude and kind consideration for all. He died 18th May, 1864, aged 68 years.
Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea saith the Spirit that they may rest from their labours and their works do follow them. (Revelation 14:13)
Also in memory of Mary Ann, widow of the above who died 30th September 1872 aged 69 years.
I haven't been able to discover anything about Frederick and Mary Ann apart from the entry of Frederick's death at Brighton - neither of them show up on census records for 1845, 1851 or 1861.

Beloved wife

Grave of  Mary Ann Parkman, St Mary de Haura, Shoreham-by-Sea. The inscription reads: In affectionate remembrance of Mary Ann, the beloved wife of George James Parkman, who died Octr. 20th. 1875 aged 40 years.
Census records for 1871 show Mary Ann living at Ireland's Court, Monmouth Street, Topsham, Devonshire with her husband George and their two children, daughter Marian and son Thomas. I can't find George on the 1881 census. On the 1891 census, George is described as an accountant and is living at 2 Selborne Place, Lorna Road, Hove, with his second wife Emma and two more children, son George and daughter Emma Louise.

Master of the Workhouse

Grave of John Henry Seaborne and his wife Mary Ann, St Mary de Haura, Shoreham-by-Sea.
The inscription reads: In affectionate remembrance of Mary Ann, the beloved wife of John Henry Seaborne. Born 22d August. 1810. Died 9th May. 1876. 
Patient in affliction calmly resigning herself to the will of God.
Also John Henry Seaborne, husband of the above, Died (?) February 1881, Aged 77 years.
I checked census records for John Henry and his wife and they both appear on the 1851, 1861 and 1871 records living with their family at the Steyning Union Workhouse, New Shoreham. John Henry's occupation is given as Master of the Workhouse; Mary Ann's as Matron and their daughter, Elizabeth, as Schoolmistress. More about the Steyning Workhouse here.

Father and son

Gravestone of Robert Deverell Pyper and his son Robert Daly Pyper, St. Andrew's Old Church, Church Road.
The inscription reads:
In memory of Robert Daly Pyper, the only and beloved Child of Robert Deverell Pyper and Harriette his Wife. Died 12 September 1850. Aged 5 years. 
The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away: blessed be the name of the Lord. 
Also of Robert Deverell Pyper M.D. Father of the above. Died 26th September 1851. Aged 34 years.
Yea, though I walk through the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me: thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Sergeant Grinstead

Gravestone, St Mary de Haura, Shoreham-by-Sea. Reading the inscription, I suspect the 'l' and 'f' in the word 'left' on the penultimate line were accidentally transposed and the word should have read 'felt'.

Family grave of John James Bartholomew Edward Frere (1812-1864), his wife Anne and daughters Anne and Susannah, St. Andrew's Old Church, Church Road. On the 1851 census, John, Anne and daughter Anne were living at Clarence Baths, Stoke Damerel, Devonport; John's occupation was given as Commander, Royal Navy. On the 1861 census, Anne and their daughters were staying with her sister at Stanford Rectory, Faringdon, Berkshire; John was Captain of HMS Orion and away at sea.
