Sackville Road 6

One Sackville Road house with a 'To Let' sign outside has an overgrown, almost wild garden that's full of colour at the moment. There's a huge pink shrub rose hanging over the garden wall - I think it's Rosa Ballerina.

Sackville Road 4

25 and 27 Sackville Road is an unusual Arts and Crafts style corner building. This end of the building, no 25, is residential; no 27 is occupied by Barnard Associates, Opthalmic Opticians.

Sackville Road 3

A little further down Sackville Road, there's a block of double-fronted houses built in soft creamy-yellow bricks instead of the more traditional red. Apart from some modern pierced concrete garden walls, the houses look very elegant.

Sackville Road 2

The opposite side of Sackville Road from yesterday's photo - large red-brick houses, many of them split up into flats.

Sackville Road 1

I've turned right at the crossroads into Sackville Road; this building stretches around the corner of Sackville Road and New Church Road and has a large mature garden. It's The Cyril Fraser House, sheltered housing for people of Jewish faith.

A little trip

This week I'm taking you on a little walking trip round my part of Hove. This is the starting point - the crossroads where Hove Street (left), New Church Road (ahead), Sackville Road (right) and Church Road (behind me) meet.

Seasonal changes

Another shot by guest blogger Liz, this time of the front of St Andrew's from the Church Road side of the gateway. The plants in the churchyard are flourishing and looking much more attractive than they did in December.

Hard sell

George Street again - this time at the Blatchington Road end. Right in the centre you can see a young man with a folder; he's trying very hard to persuade the young lady with the bike to sign up to one of those give-an-amount-every-month-to-a-charity schemes. This sort of 'charity donation selling' by pouncing on someone in the street really irritates me; once pounced on, it's very hard to get away from the seller without being rude. Judging by her body language, the lady in white's not very keen either...

Out and about

There were lots of folks out and about in George Street this morning. They were enjoying the warm weather, shopping and eating out in the many pavement cafes. The colour of that sky looks a bit ominous though...

Hypericum

Hypericum (also known as St. John's Wort) is one of the shrubs that grow well in seaside gardens. The yellow flowers are so bright in colour that they almost seem to glow against the glossy foliage.

Another pavilion

This building looks elegant enough to be an orangery; it's actually the bowls pavilion at Preston Park.

An afternoon in the park

I usually meet up with friends on Friday afternoons for knitting, nattering and cake scoffing. Now the weather's getting better, we're able to sit outside and enjoy some of Brighton & Hove's lovely parks. Today we were in Brighton's Preston Park; this is the view looking towards the Rose Garden.

Enjoying the sunshine

I spotted this contented tabby enjoying the sunshine in one of Vallance Road's leafy gardens. Isn't he a beauty?

Closer to the roof

I do like Brighton Station; it seems to retain that elusive Age-of-Steam-Trains atmosphere (unlike many British main line stations) and sports some beautifully decorative ironwork.

A slightly interrupted view

For the last couple of weeks, I haven't been able to take any balcony photos looking down Hove Street towards the sea. This is the reason why - the block of flats I live in is shrouded in scaffolding and green netting while maintainence work goes on. Normal service (and my lovely sea view from the balcony) will be resumed in nine or so weeks...

Coast road

Looking west down Kingsway, the road along the coast that crosses the end of my street. It's part of the A259 which runs from Folkestone in the east right across to Havant in the west, passing through Hastings, Eastbourne, Brighton, Hove, Worthing, Bognor and Chichester. I took this photo early on Saturday morning which explains why the road isn't very busy. Don't the bikers look colourful?
