Boxing Day constitutional

If you live in Brighton & Hove, it's traditional to go for a bracing Boxing Day walk along the seafront. The weather today is glorious -crisp and sunny - and I was out mid-morning so I could avoid jostling for space with the afternoon crowds.

A different December

The weather's grey, dark, cold and dreary by the seaside. Until things improve, I thought I'd show you some unpublished December shots from previous years. Beach huts on Hove seafront on December 7, 2008.

The white-liners are back

This time they're changing the uses of some parking bays on Princes Avenue by burning off the old lettering.

Some progress

There's been some progress on last week's roof, although I rarely see anyone actually working on it when I walk past. Comparing the two photographs, today's overcast, grey weather is much less appealing to look at than last week's bright sunshine.

Looking in the opposite direction from yesterday's photo; this time towards Blatchington Road.

Parcels

I'm on my way to Hove Delivery Office to collect a couple of parcels that Royal Mail tried to deliver earlier this week. It's cold today and the sky is a chilly light blue. It's a rather boring walk with nothing much to look at and the route is uphill all the way from where I live. This is the view from halfway up Goldstone Villas with Hove Station in the distance.

Work on this roof has been in progress for weeks; it's not really the ideal time of year to be without a lid on your house!

Another bus stop photo from yesterday - this one taken on my way to Seven Dials while I was waiting for the 7 bus at the bottom of Goldstone Villas.

Strange shape

Waiting at Seven Dials for a 27 bus to go spend the afternoon knitting and tea drinking with Steph of The Tea Taster and other friends, I noticed the strange shape of this end-of-terrace building. It's on the corner of Melville Road and Dyke Road.

Roadworks

Roadworks where the A2023 Hove Street joins Hove Street South have extended round the corner down the A259 Kingsway; can't be much fun for drivers.

The snow's gone, washed away by heavy rain over the weekend. It's very cold here today and there are crispy, crunchy patches of ice on the pavements.

New to me

I haven't seen this before - snow and ice topped by a layer of autumn leaves. My part of the UK has had a very early snowfall this year; many trees hadn't shed all their leaves by the time the ground became covered with snow. When temperatures dropped below freezing, the remaining leaves fell.

Putting on a front

I took this earlier in the year when I was walking back home from Hove seafront. The cloud formations were spectacular against a bright blue sky. This is the car park next to the King Alfred Leisure Centre which is hidden from the main coast road by a long row of advertising hoardings.

It's still snowing

Princes Avenue 7.47am; it's been snowing steadily since yesterday.

A little more

Princes Avenue 8.47am; a little more snow overnight and it's still falling. So far, this area has got off very lightly compared to much of the UK.

Doing it freehand

Straight sections of letters are painted with the help of a metal bar so the lines don't wobble; curves are done freehand.

Repainting road signs

Work is under way locally to repaint faded and worn road signs - this is one of the disabled parking bays outside the Federation of Disabled People in Hove Street.

A long autumn 2

Pembroke Crescent taken on the same day as yesterday's photo. According the the Met Office, temperatures are set to plummet later in the week - that should see off the last of the leaves.

Many of the trees near where I live haven't dropped their leaves yet in spite of some fairly appalling weather over the last few weeks. This is what the junction of New Church Road and Sackville Road looked like yesterday.

Much the same

This photograph, looking down Hove Street towards the sea, was taken almost a year ago and the scene looks much the same today. Damp, cold and wintery, although the sea is calmer this morning (that's due to change because a thunderstorm is forecast for early afternoon) and there are roadworks near the traffic lights.

Constantly changing clouds

The clouds were amazing yesterday; constantly changing shape, texture and colour throughout the day like a slide show. I took this photograph from my balcony at 11.20am and lots more during the afternoon.
