John Frere R.N.

Family grave of John James Bartholomew Edward Frere (1812-1864), his wife Anne and daughters Anne and Susannah, St. Andrew's Old Church, Church Road. On the 1851 census, John, Anne and daughter Anne were living at Clarence Baths, Stoke Damerel, Devonport; John's occupation was given as Commander, Royal Navy. On the 1861 census, Anne and their daughters were staying with her sister at Stanford Rectory, Faringdon, Berkshire; John was Captain of HMS Orion and away at sea.

Interesting memorial, I love the bronze plaque. Orion was a good sized ship and at the turn of the age from sail to steam.

The bronze plaque makes this a unique headstone. I get the anchor, but not the man in the "diaper" with feather headdress...?

Had to laugh at Francisca's 'diaper' comment. I take the figure to be a crucified Christ figure ... on an anchor, which being an Aussie reminded me of a surf-board ... and the shape of the plaque represents a port-hole. A bit of a mishmash really.

Hopefully the girls were interred well after their parents ... I have not seen pigeons on headstones here ... just ravens!!
