Lieut Colonel Henry Hebden

Gravestone of Henry and Mary Ann Hebden, St. Andrew's Old Church, Church Road.
The inscription reads: Sacred to the memory of Lieut Colonel Henry Hebden. Late 5(?)th Regiment. Died October 24th 1879, in the 90th year of his age. 
And of Mary Ann, widow of the above. Died March 18th 1887.
Believe and thou shall be saved.

It is interesting that many military graves have this style.

Isn't the moss/lichen just delicious on this tomb? I do like the shape. I have found that this shape is also often used by Catholic clergy.

I like the raised lettering, however, the attraction to vandals is obvious although deplorabe.

I guess Henry Hebden wore a cocked hat, sat upon a horse, had an eye-glass and a sheathed sword. Just in my mind's eye, you realise.
