Crows

Sitting on the beach this afternoon, I noticed that there were lots of crows standing around on the shingle.

Yesterday, again

Today is cold, wet and windy; the sea is a mucky beige colour (never a good sign) so here's a reminder of yesterday's gorgeous warm blueness.

The great outdoors

It's been lovely and warm at the seaside all this week and Brighton & Hove Safari Knitters celebrated the weather this afternoon with the first outdoor knit of the year in St Ann's Well Gardens. The park was really busy and we knitters were sandwiched between bowls practice and massed groups of mums-with-kids. A noisy but nice afternoon...

Sweet things

Sweet Boutique at 172 Church Road, Hove, sells old-fashioned sweeties in the traditional out-of-the-jar way. Cinder toffee or sherbet lemons anyone?

White and fragrant

Mexican Orange Blossom (Choisya ternata) is a popular evergreen shrub for planting in seaside gardens. Once established, it's as tough as old boots and the flowers have the most glorious fragrance. This plant overhangs a wall in a Hove Street garden and you can smell the flowers from several feet away.

Coldean

Looking down Hawkhurst Road from the spot where I took yesterday's photograph. It was a very warm day for April, but rather hazy.

Fancy an icecream?

Marroccos is an Italian restaurant on Hove seafront that sells 24 flavours of icecream - on sunny days like today, there's always a long queue outside.

Plain and fancy

To finish the week, another shot of Corinthian capitals in Brunswick Square. The columns on this flat-fronted house are much plainer than the ones on many bow-fronted houses of the same period, but the capitals are just as ornate.

Black and white 3

Brunswick Square again, but these steps lead up to the front door of a different house.

Fanciful

This extraordinary building is on Western Terrace, Brighton, one of the little streets running at right angles off Western Road.

Glimpsed...

...down the alley between two red-brick houses on Vallance Road.

Another boundary marker

The vertical line marks the boundary between Hove Parish (HP) and Brighton Parish (BP). The stone marker is set into the pavement at the foot of Boundary Passage, a narrow alley running from the northern side of Western Road between York Road and Norfolk Road.

Pheasant on a wall

A pheasant isn't the usual sort of bird you expect to find at the seaside - much more colourful that a seagull or pigeon!

Saturday 4 April 2009

Sunset with seagulls

Tonight's sunset - the 100m high tower in the distance is part of Shoreham Power Station.

Friday 3 April 2009

Grey

After several days of sunny and warm weather, it's been grey and cold by the sea today - one of those dreary days when you can hardly make out the horizon.

Thursday 2 April 2009

Ancient & modern

What a mixture of architectural styles! Looking from the seafront across King's Road, that's the Holiday Inn on the left and the West Beach Hotel on the right.
